The brakes suddenly fail and the car careers out of control down the mountain. Somehow, they manage to ram the car against the crash barrier and skid to a halt only seconds from falling off the edge of a cliff. Now they have a problem, they are still miles from home, halfway down a mountain, in a car with no brakes. What should they do? The manager steps forward. "I know," he says, "Let's arrange a meeting, propose a vision, formulate a misson statement, define goals, create milestones, and follow a process of continuous improvement to find a solution to our problem." The hardware engineer steps forward. "No that we will take far too long," he says. "I have my toolbox in the trunk. I can strip down the car's braking system, isolate the fault, and fix it in no time at all." Then the computer programmer steps forward. "That's all very well.
